How to deal with study problems

Are you having study problems? Confused about what is expected? Your grades lower than usual? 
Students are often surprised to find that there are cultural differences in approaches to education and learning.
                 For example, the criteria for writing papers or writing reports may be different from what you have been used to. Being assessed on tasks such as making a presentation or participating in a discussion group may be new for you.








Areas where you may need to develop new skills 

  • The academic writing style 
  • Making presentations Doing group assignments  
  • Participating in group discussions
  • Thinking critically
  • Working in English 
          Below are tips for students. They can gain benefit after study that:


1. Learn from your mistakes:
                                                              If you receive a lower grade than expected make an appointment to discuss your assignment with your lecturer or tutor. Be open to a new approach and accept that the criteria may be different from what you are used to. Find out what you could do to  to get a better grade next time.


2. Attend a study skills workshop:
                                                                       Workshops for international students are held regularly in Plexus by the International Student Support Services. They cover topics such as Understanding the Dutch Study System, Strategic Studying and Time Management. 




3. Develop a circle of study friends:
                                                           A group of study friends can be invaluable for comparing notes, sharing study materials, discussing assessment tasks, hearing tips, keeping up-to-date with announcements and staying motivated.




4. Give yourself time:
                                    You may need a  few months to adjust to the new system and learn new skills. It can be a good idea to let parents and others at home know that  because of the different language and unfamiliar approach your grades may be initially lower.   Many students find that developing a new perspective on learning is one of the valuable experiences of studying abroad.


5. Talk to a student counselor:
                                                    If you are becoming overly anxious or stressed about your study it may be helpful to talk to a student counselor. A few talks with a trained counselor can help you clarify the issues you are dealing with and find some solutions.
